Robert D. Delia

Senwosret III is one of the best known kings of the ancient Egyptian Twelfth Dynasty; nevertheless, his reign has not been the subject of a detailed historical investigation. To remedy this situation, the present study examines various aspects of his reign by utilizing royal and private sources. Senwosret's immediate family is reconstructed as far as our information permits. His foreign relations with Nubia and Asia are analyzed and a translation and commentary on the Year Sixteen Semna Stela are included. Also enumerated are the activities of the king within Egypt which can be discerned from the remains of his buildings and textual evidence. Private persons are identified as officials in Senwosret's administration. Against the background of other alleged Twelfth Dynasty coregencies, the problem of whether or not Senwosret shared the throne is investigated. Finally, some conclusions about the personality of Senwosret are drawn. Appendices discuss the length of his reign and the role of the military.
